This total included 22 species of waterfowl (26 with loons and grebes), including all 3 species of swans. Raptors were well represented with 14 species seen. Osprey (97) and Bald Eagle (89) numbers were good as their populations continue to grow, while migrants and rare breeders were found in low numbers such as Northern Harrier (6), Merlin (1) and Golden Eagle (1).
Numbers of rails were low with just Virginia Rail (11) and Sora (13) reported. Just 2 weeks prior to the count, Alex and I had 10 Virginia Rails just at Julian Wetlands in Centre County. 15 species of shorebirds were reported with most of them being the expected. Upland Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, and White-rumped Sandpipers, Dunlin and Short-billed Dowitchers were good finds.
The expected 35 species of warblers were reported with really good numbers of Ovenbird (1,589), Common Yellowthroat (1,417), American Redstart (1,083), Yellow (2,108), Yellow-rumped (733), Chestnut-sided (531) and Black-throated Green Warblers (530). Also good to see were some winged warblers with Golden-winged (33), Blue-winged (121) and Brewster’s Warblers (4) reported.
The most common songbirds were Red-eyed Vireo (2,209), American Robin (4,532), Gray Catbird (3,472), and Red-winged Blackbird (2,987).
Some of the rarer reports included Brant, Trumpeter Swan, Golden Eagle, Sandhill Crane, Upland Sandpiper, Connecticut Warbler, Henslow’s Sparrow, Summer Tanager and Dickcissel. (links take you to eBird maps of sightings from this May)
Notable misses from the eBird total that I noticed are Red-throated Loon, Great Cormorant, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Northern Goshawk, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Forster’s Tern, Black Tern, Eurasian Collared-Dove, Short-eared Owl. Are there other species that you would have expected but don’t see on this list?
