This week I chanced upon some very cooperative Red-breasted Mergansers that weren’t hiding in the middle of the lake like they usually do. These males were swimming and preening in the Oswego River in Phoenix, NY less than 50 feet away from where I was standing. A lot of waterfowl can be found using the river while they wait for many of the nearby lakes to thaw.
