Rufous Hummingbird – Grantville, PA

A hatch-year male Rufous Hummingbird has been coming in to feeders at the home of Tim Becker in Grantville, PA since November 11th. Josh Lefever and I finally had an opportunity to try and see the bird yesterday, and didn’t have to wait very long for the beautiful western hummer to come in and show off. Almost as soon as we arrived, I could hear the characteristic call of the hummingbird but we couldn’t spot it. After a few minutes the bird flew down to one of the two feeders and then was in view for the rest of our visit, either perched up in the top of one of the trees around the yard or at one of the feeders. The bird appears to have a healed injury on its upper mandible. Below is a photo I took of the bird yesterday as well as a video Andy McGann took of the bird back in November.
